Boiling Water
Boiling water is the easiest way to unclog a sink. However, there are some risks to this method. If your pipes are PVC or plastic and are not rated for a minimum of 212 degrees Fahrenheit, the boiling water could melt or deform your drain piping. This could cause leaks and possibly further problems.
Boil a pot of water. Slowly and carefully pour the water down the drain. Wait a few seconds between pours to allow the boiling water to melt soap scum, dissolve grime or break up and loosen solids. Repeat as necessary.
Baking soda and vinegar
Pour a pot of boiling water down the drain followed by a cup of baking soda. Next, pour a cup of white vinegar down the drain and cover with a drain plug. Wait five to ten minutes then pour boiling water down the drain again. Repeat if necessary.
Plunger
Plungers aren’t just great to use when you want to unclog a toilet, they’re also a helpful tool to unclog a sink. (We recommend that you purchase a small sink plunger for this project or, if you use the same one you use in the toilet, thoroughly sanitize the sink afterward).
- If you have a garbage disposal and a dishwasher- you can unplug the garbage disposal and plug the dishwasher drain (optional). If your dishwasher is connected to your kitchen sink by a garbage disposal, you must block it off to prevent water from getting pushed into your dishwasher.
- Fill the sink with a few inches of water which will create a suction and allows the plunger to force water against the clog.
- Apply moderate pressure and plunge up and down slowly and constantly until the clog begins to dissolve, and the water begins to drain.
- Flush the drain by running the pipe /faucet for a few minutes. If the water flows down freely, it’s an indication that the clog has been dissolved.
Drain Snake
- Insert the snake by pushing the end of the snake into the opening of the drain.
2 Turn the handle on the drum of the coiled-up snake to send it further into the pipe, until you feel resistance (clog).
- Continue twisting the snake until you feel the clog dissolving. The blockage will either break free or you can pull it out.
- Run water down the drain for several minutes to make sure the clog is gone.
